چکیده

We examine isovector and isoscalar neutron-proton correlations in an exactly solvable model based on the algebra SO(8). We look particularly closely at Gamow-Teller strength and double beta decay, both to isolate the effects of the two kinds of pairing and to test two approximation schemes: the renor-malized neutron-proton QRPA (RQRPA) and generalized BCS theory. When isoscalar pairing correlations become strong enough a phase transition occurs and the dependence of the Gamow-Teller β + strength on isospin changes in a dramatic and unfamiliar way, actually increasing as neutrons are added to an N = Z core. Renormalization eliminates the well-known instabilities that plague the QRPA as the phase transition is approached, but only by unnaturally suppressing the isoscalar correlations. Generalized BCS theory, on the other hand, reproduces the Gamow-Teller strength more accurately in the isoscalar phase than in the usual isovector phase, even though its predictions for energies are equally good everywhere. It also mixes T = 0 and T = 1 pairing, but only on the isoscalar side of the phase transition.

We perform Shell Model Monte Carlo calculations to study pair correlations in the ground states of N = Z nuclei with masses A = 48 − 60. We find that T = 1, J π = 0 + proton-neutron correlations play an important, and even dominant role, in the ground states of odd-odd N = Z nuclei, in agreement with experiment. By studying pairing in the ground states of 52−58 Fe, we observe that the isovector...

The Baldin sum rule for the nucleon has been recalculated at the light of the most recent photoabsorption cross section measurements. The proton value (α + β) p = 13.69 ± 0.14 is smaller but consistent with the one usually quoted in literature. However, the value for the neutron (α + β) n = 14.40 ± 0.66 turns out to be three standard deviations away from the previously calculated one.

We search for three-neutron resonances which were predicted from pion double charge exchange experiments on 3 He. All partial waves up to J = 5 2 are nonresonant except the J π = 3 2 + one, where we find a state at E = 14 MeV energy with 13 MeV width. The parameters of the mirror state in the three-proton system are E = 15 MeV and Γ = 14 MeV. The possible existence of an excited state in the tr...

The ∆ decay in the nuclear medium is calculated in the relativistic mesonnucleon model. The delta spreading width is calculated and compared with the Pauli-blocked πN decay width. The influence of relativistic mean fields is also studied. We stress the importance of understanding the delta spreading width in interpreting experiments involving delta resonances.
